This presentation discusses what trauma-informed care means, how it started, and what it looks like in end-of-life care. Trauma sources, symptoms, principles, and treatments are unique within hospice care, and how they can be addressed using a trauma and end-of-life framework is multi-disciplinary and agency-wide.

Expert panelists:

Amber Ash
, LISW-S, LMSW, is a pediatric hospice and palliative care social worker and cochair of the Trauma Informed Care Committee at Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. She also has experience providing end-of-life care to adults and has served as a clinical supervisor. Amber has served as a field educator for social work students at Case Western Reserve’s Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and Cleveland State University. Additionally, she was a field educator for the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology at The State University of New York at Buffalo, as well as the School of Nursing at The State University of New York at Buffalo. Amber earned her Bachelor of Science degree in social work from Niagara University and her Master of social work degree with a concentration in health, mental health and disabilities from The State University of New York at Buffalo.

Christina Axelrod, MT-BC, CT, has been a Music Therapist for Hospice of the Western Reserve for 12 years and stepped into the role of Internship Director in 2015. Christina graduated from State University of New Paltz in 2007 and is currently enrolled in the Clinical Mental Health program at Cleveland State for her counseling license. In 2021, Christina became co-chair of the Trauma-Informed Care Committee and has a focus on trauma at end-of-life in her current role and her studies.
