Orrin Ware is an assistant professor at the UNC School of Social Work. In addition to his role within the School of Social Work, Ware holds a secondary appointment as an adjunct assistant professor with the UNC Department of Psychiatry.
Ware has graduate-level training in behavioral pharmacology, epidemiology, public health and social work. He has real-world practice experience as a clinical social worker in a specialty crisis stabilization unit for individuals experiencing a non-fatal overdose; a clinical social worker in outpatient/residential addiction treatment; and a community public health researcher on a mobile clinic for HIV in high-risk areas such as where sex work occurs and substances are traded.
His research focuses on substance use and substance use disorders. To this end, he has published more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles covering topics of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, specialty services provided by addiction treatment facilities, and cat/dog exposures to drugs. Ware uses large publicly available datasets, electronic medical record, and primary data to conduct research.
Ware was a Brandeis-Harvard SPIRE Center SUD Systems Performance Scholar and an editorial fellow for the Journal of Addiction Medicine. He is currently a Stanford C-DIAS Fellow and University Psychedelic Education Program Faculty Fellow.
