Dr. Bethany Stillion is a visiting professor at Arkansas State University, has taught death and dying courses at the university level and has served as a presenter and panelist for the Association for Death Education and Counseling.


In the United States, persons aged 65 and older make up 13% of the population but account for 18% of all suicides. Dr. Stillion examines trends and hallmarks of elderly suicide and suggests approaches for working with seniors experiencing suicidal ideation. She also discusses supporting family and friends when a suicide occurs.

Mindfulness-based interventions are becoming more and more popular in hospice and mental health settings, and they appear to be a one-size-fits-all solution to alleviate suffering. Care must be taken, however, to offer an appropriate style of meditation for the client’s circumstance, and to do so with a trauma-sensitive approach. This webinar explores how meditation can help with the physical and emotional reactions to grief, and in particular how it can help bereaved people cope with a wide range of difficult emotions.
