Improving Care for Veterans Facing Illness and Death
Starting from $
Improving Care for Veterans Facing Illness and Death is designed to assist end-of-life care provider organizations and health and human service professionals in enhancing their sensitivities and understanding of veterans and to provide professionals with new interventions to better serve dying veterans and their families. Particular attention is placed on veteran generations now aging and most likely to be seen in end-of-life care (WWII, Korean War, Vietnam). In addition to individual interventions, the program will also look organizationally at military benefits and intersections with VA systems. Finally, the program explores the traditions and sensitivities of grieving families and resources that can assist them. Expert Panelists:

Intimacy and Sexuality During Illness and Loss - Book
HFA's publication, Intimacy and Sexuality During Illness and Loss, edited by Kenneth J. Doka and Amy S. Tucci, identifies barriers to intimacy and sexuality for terminally ill persons and the bereaved and the knowledge and skills professionals must have to sensitively address and suggest interventions to help meet these elemental human needs. As contributing author John Cagle notes, “Despite a prevailing misperception that the latter stages of life are fraught with gloom and doom, many patients with life-limiting illness engage in humor, loving expressions, and physical connection. Loving relationships can be strengthened, even in the face of serious and life-limiting illness. Practitioners can work to facilitate social connections and family involvement for patients. Reframing the ‘dying’ experience as ‘living yet to do’ may serve to empower patients and families to engage in intimate conversations and affectionate activities.”

The issue is a helpful supplement to your organization's introductory literature and is also appropriate for family or friends of hospice patients who are experiencing hospice care for the first time. The issue is available as a single issue or in packs of 50 or 100. Organizations such as hospitals, churches and hospices have used Journeys Special Issues to support and inform their community.
