Helping Adolescents Cope with Loss
Starting from $
Adolescence, broadly defined, from middle school years to emerging adulthood, is a significant developmental period during which adolescents form identity, independence, and intimacy. Illness and loss profoundly influences these processes. Moreover, adolescent encounters with loss are likely to be traumatic – deaths by accident, suicide, and homicide. This program focuses exclusively on the issues that adolescents face as they cope with loss and explores the ways that healthcare workers, hospices, educators, social workers, counselors, clergy, funeral directors, and other professionals can assist adolescents as they cope with loss. Supporting Bereaved College Students - Self Study
When emerging adults and college students experience loss, they may have difficulty in coping with that loss. The losses they face may be the first they’ve ever experienced, whether of a family member or a friend. These young adults are often far from their normal and natural support systems, and as they strive for independence and autonomy they may be reluctant to reach out for support. School-based counselors may have limited experience with grief. In this self-study, we focus on effective strategies for supporting college students and other emerging adults.
