Chapter 17: Serving the Bereavement Needs of Veterans and Their Families

Patricia McGuire’s chapter focuses on offering bereavement services to military families. McGuire describes the many factors that can complicate bereavement care, and notes that the shared stoicism of military culture may inhibit seeking bereavement services. McGuire explores how the multiple moves that military families make may limit opportunities for support, particularly for foreignborn spouses. McGuire is especially sensitive how the separations and strains of military life, including the possibility of multiple divorces and families, as well as the stress of combat and possible Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),can create difficulties in family relations that can complicate grief.
