Message from David Abrams, President/CEO
On March 22, HFA will broadcast our
14th annual National Bereavement Teleconference. Living With Grief®:
Before and After the Death, will explore the most current
theoretical perspectives on loss and grief as experienced by persons
throughout a life-limiting illness and by survivors after the death.
Understanding grief and its impact is core to the hospice philosophy,
and we look forward to a stimulating and enlightening examination. If
you are interested in attending but cannot host a site, we urge you to
go to our website
to find a site near you.
We are very grateful to this year's
teleconference sponsors for their support of this year's program, and
have listed them in this issue. Please visit their websites. We were
pleased to speak with George Kelder of the New Jersey Funeral Service
Education Corporation, who is piloting an interesting program to help
foster relationships between funeral directors and other professionals
both before and after death.
If you are hosting a site for this
year’s program, did you know that HFA now offers the teleconference via
satellite AND webcast? Using a webcast to bring the teleconference to
your community may offer you opportunities that are not available with
the satellite system. Click here to learn more about the
technical requirements.

Focus on: Interview with George Kelder, New
Jersey Funeral Service Education Corporation
The title of this year’s
teleconference, Living With Grief®:
Before and After the Death,
recognizes the need to support families throughout the process of
illness and loss. In a
recent interview with George Kelder, the discussion focused on the
important role that funeral directors can play in this process. “By
working with other professionals such as hospice staff, funeral
directors can provide a more comprehensive, supportive system of care.
Ultimately, families are better served when allied professionals come
together to assist them during this most difficult journey.”

HFA’s Newest Publication
For the first time, Hospice Foundation
of America requested artwork from hospices nationwide for the 2007
teleconference, Living With Grief®:
Before and After the Death. Hospice
patients, family members, caregivers, hospice professionals and
volunteers produced submissions. Hospice Foundation of America has
chosen the artwork, “Woven Memories,” from Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice
in Wichita, Kansas to be displayed as a cover image for our 2007 Living
With Grief® companion book.
This is the first time in 14 years of
publishing a book on end-of-life care that HFA has elected to have a
contest for its cover art. Submissions that were made to HFA included
works produced by hospice patients, family members, caregivers, and
hospice professionals and volunteers. We wish to thank all the
participants who sent in these wonderful works.
The book will be available at a
discounted price to those organizations that have registered as sites
for the 2007 Teleconference. The book will be available for sale to the
general public after March 22.
