Message from David Abrams, President
------------------------------------------------------------
One of HFA's major initiatives has always been in the field of grief and
bereavement. Through our annual teleconference, training programs, and
publications, HFA has always helped to put forth information and new thinking
about grief and loss. We have been fortunate to have Dr. Kenneth J. Doka as our
Senior Bereavement Consultant for more than twelve years. While many of you know
Ken's work on the teleconference and as the Editor of "Journeys" and
our teleconference book series, Ken has had a long and fruitful career as a
leader in this field. We're pleased to feature an interview with him this month.
------------------------------------------------------------
Focus on: Interview with Ken Doka
------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Kenneth J. Doka has been writing, teaching, and educating about grief and
bereavement since the 1970s.
Recently, Dr. Doka discussed
with HFA how he began working in the field of death and dying; the ways that
thinking about grief and loss has changed since that time; and some of the most
current developments.

In Memoriam
------------------------------------------------------------
HFA honors Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who died in August.
Dr. Kubler-Ross was instrumental in educating the general public on the role
that grief and bereavement plays in our lives, and was an early supporter of
hospice care for the dying. HFA sends condolences to her family, friends, and
everyone who came in contact with the pioneer who paved many paths to all who
sought and still seek to understand how to live with grief.

What's New @HFA
------------------------------------------------------------
HFA's "Clergy-to-Clergy" Audio Series is now available on CD.
"Clergy to Clergy" was developed in cooperation with Yale Divinity
School in order to provide clergy members with a way to learn more about
bereavement, and to help them both minister to their communities and see to
their own needs as caregivers. A set of six CDs plus a Resource Guide is just
$20. Order here or call 800-854-3402.

HFA's 12th Annual National Bereavement Teleconference will focus on
"Living With Grief: Ethical Dilemmas at the End of Life." The
live-via-satellite program, moderated by Cokie Roberts, will be broadcast
Wednesday, April 20, 2005 from 1:30pm to 4:00pm EDT.
The teleconference will examine issues regarding the social perspectives of
medical ethics and how various health care settings may influence ethical
decisions at the end of life. A distinguished panel of ethicists, educators,
clergy members, and hospice experts will define, differentiate and demonstrate
the interrelationships between values, ethics and law, and examine how cultural
differences may influence ethical choices. The panel will include Charles Corr,
Ken Doka, Richard Fife, Jack Gordon, Bernice Harper, Bruce Jennings, Bill Lamers,
Richard Payne, and JoAnne Riefsnyder.
Early Bird Special: The site registration fee is only $20 for Site
Coordinators who register before January 15th! More information about the
