Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter
Volume 1, Issue 4
May 2001

----------------------------------------
Message from David Abrams, President
----------------------------------------

Thank you to all who participated in HFA's 8th annual National Bereavement Teleconference, Caregiving and Loss: Family Needs, Professional Responses, on April 18. The program was seen live in more than 2500 communities across the U.S. and Canada. We appreciate all of the comments that we have received from our audience members, and are confident that the ideas discussed on the program will impact policies, programs, and practices that support professionals and the families they serve.

If you participated in the teleconference, please take a few minutes to fill out our Web survey at http://www.msu.edu/~approg/hfa/ (SURVEY PERIOD HAS ENDED) before Friday, May 11. Your answers will help us in planning future programs, and we'll be happy to send you a complimentary copy of our book, Living With Grief: When Illness is Prolonged, for your input.

Our 2002 teleconference will focus on issues of aging and loss. We're honored that Robert Butler, M.D., a pioneer in the field of aging, has agreed to serve on the panel. Please watch this newsletter for an announcement of the date within the next few weeks!

Focus On: Creative Therapies and Grief
----------------------------------------

A noted author writes, "Sometimes we may not be able to find words for the grief. Sometimes there are no words." Creative expression - whether through music, writing, or other art forms - can be a powerful way for bereaved people to deal with the intense emotions that grief engenders. These types of therapies can be particularly useful with grieving children and adolescents, who may not have the ability to put their feelings into words.

What's New @ HFA
-----------------------

HFA congratulates Kenneth J. Doka, Senior Consultant for HFA, and Terry Martin on the recent publication of their book, "Men Don't Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief". Published by Brunner/Mazel, the book emphasizes that there are many healthy ways to cope with grief; it examines the intuitive pattern and the instrumental pattern and introduces a blend of these patterns.

HFA has received an overwhelming response to the publication of our new brochures, "The 3 Vs of Good Friendship: Supporting Your Friend Through Illness and Loss" and "Facing Illness and Loss: Caring for Someone Who is Dying". More than 17,000 copies have been ordered by individuals and organizations. Read more.
