Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter - July 2001Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter -------------------------------------------------------- HFA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR OUR 9TH ANNUAL NATIONAL BEREAVEMENT TELECONFERENCE! Living With Grief: Loss In Later Life will be broadcast live-via-satellite on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, 1:30pm-4:00pm EDT. Please see below for more details. ----------------------------------------------------------------- In the early days of the study of grief, researchers and theorists attempted to find predictable stages of phases that individuals experienced as they grieved or coped with loss. Recently there has been a move away from such approaches, as it became clear that these models did not take into account the impact that personal identity can have on the grieving process. Theorists and clinicians now have an increasing sensitivity and insight into the role that key aspects of identity-such as ethnicity, gender, age and developmental level, class, and spirituality-play in the grieving process. Some resources do exist to help professionals examine these issues, although much of the professional literature still does not reflect the diversity of the population. By exploring the available resources, and by simply asking questions and listening openly to responses, professionals can greatly enhance the support they offer to those facing end-of-life situations and grief. A bibliography of resources on how cultural differences affect end-of-life decision-making and care compiled by the Diversity Committee of Last Acts. [Note: This program has ended.] ACCESS advocates for end-of-life care that reflects a commitment to multiculturalism and provide education about death, dying, and grieving from a multicultural perspective. Diversity Rx is a clearinghouse of information on how to meet the language and cultural needs of minorities, immigrants, refugees and other diverse populations seeking health care. In 1998, Hospice Foundation of America focused on how culture, gender, race, development, and spirituality impact the grieving process.
