Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter - April 2001

Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter
Volume 1, Issue 3
April 2001

-------------------------------------------
Message from David Abrams, President
-------------------------------------------

We at HFA are looking forward to the April 18 broadcast of our largest educational program of the year. HFA's 8th annual National Bereavement Teleconference, Caregiving and Loss: Family Needs, Professional Responses, will be seen in more than 2,000 communities across North America. Learn more about the program.

HFA is focusing on caregiving this year because hospice provides an ideal model for addressing the difficulties involved in caregiving. The hospice philosophy of care is family-centered, holistic, and interdisciplinary. Critical to the hospice concept is the belief that the patient and the family are an essential part of the healthcare team and must always remain at the center of care and decision making.

----------------------------------------
Focus On: Caregiving and Loss
----------------------------------------

In addition to the teleconference, HFA has developed an extensive set of resources as part of our ongoing initiative on Caregiving and Loss. Find practical suggestions on communicating with doctors and organizing a Caregiver Fair; learn about a model employee support program; read a special message from Rosalynn Carter; utilize our extensive Resource List; and experience caregiving through the Voices of family caregivers. Many of these articles are available for reprinting; please contact lveglahn@hospicefoundation.org for permission.

What's New @ HFA
--------------------------

With the generous support of Last Acts, HFA has created "Taking Action" - a document listing ten practical steps that professionals can take to improve the policies, programs and practices that affect family caregivers. Download this document in PDF format.

One of life's more difficult moments is when you learn that a friend, or someone he or she loves, is seriously or terminally ill. HFA has created two new brochures to give practical and supportive advice to anyone facing difficult end-of-life questions. Download a free sample of "Supporting Your Friend Through Illness and Loss" and "Caring for Someone Who is Dying".
