Traumatic and Sudden Loss - Self Study

This webinar examines some of the ways that traumatic and sudden loss, including suicide, homicide, and community losses, can impact or complicate bereavement, and how hospices and other organizations can be better prepared to serve as a resource for these types of losses, even those that happen outside of the hospice environment.

Dr. Doka is the Senior Consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America and a professor at the Graduate School of the College of New Rochelle. He serves as the Editor of HFA’s bereavement newsletter, Journeys.  Dr. Doka is a licensed Mental Health Counselor and an Ordained Lutheran Minister, and has served as a panelist on all twenty-one HFA Living with Grief programs. Dr. Doka was recently awarded the Special Contributions Award from the Association of Death Education and Counseling.

Reverend Wanda Henry-Jenkins has worked as a Bereavement Manager with VITAS for 15 years and is currently serving the Chicago area; she has worked in healthcare and human services for more than forty years. Reverend Henry-Jenkins is a published author and writer, with experience in bereavement, ministry, and cultural competency. Reverend Henry-Jenkins was a panelist on HFA’s “Diversity and End-of-Life Care” program. 

Ms. Ruocco is the Chief External Relations Officer for Suicide prevention and Postvention for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).  Ms. Ruocco develops comprehensive, peer-based programs that provide specific care to all those grieving a death by suicide in the military. Ms. Ruocco is currently the co-lead on the National Action Alliance Military and Family Task force and an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) trainer. She has a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work from Boston University.
