Chapter 6: When a Sibling Dies

Nancy Hogan reflects upon a different kind of familiar loss, that of a sibling. The sibling bond is unique. Siblings are family but the relationships are more equal, less hierarchical than they are in the parent-child bond. Siblings are part of our identity. Our place in the constellation of siblings - older, younger, or middle - deeply influences development. Siblings also share unique perceptions, such as the smell of Mom's perfume or the taste of Grandma's biscuits.
